Welcome to my "online museum" with the aim of documenting as many pieces as possible of of the Royal Winton Grimwades "Roses" transfer ware - Pattern number 494 (but some of my pieces also read 1094 which has always mystified me!). For those who are interested I also maintain online references to 3 other china patterns which you can jump to via the links below:

I collected this pattern for many years in the cream/white (it varies! I don't really know why some are more white than others) colourway although I've also seen this set against a bronze background as well as in pastel rainbow shades - I believe those pieces are hand painted. I've sadly now parted with most pieces but still have a love for it and now do my "collecting" in the form of photographs. The design shapes in this were prolific, and I'm constantly coming across pieces I haven't seen before. I especially love how many decorative pieces there are in it - pretty serving dishes and little trinket boxes, and the amazing wall pockets. Aesthetically wonderful!

I was first inspired to collect it when I came across a magazine article several years ago about a woman called Gail who collected this as well as the Royal Doulton English Rose china I also collect. This is a photo of her collection - lots and lots of wonderful pieces I've yet to even see, sigh..! Clearly she and I share the same taste so I'm grateful to the article for sparking another collecting passion (not sure my husband is as grateful..!). I've since become friends with Gail personally, via this website, and it's been a joy comparing collections :-)

Simply click on any image below and the full-sized photograph will open in a new page - make sure the new pop-up page is then maximised to show the photo in full. Please respect that all images remain my intellectual property so please don't reproduce them without contacting me first.

This is one of my all-time favourite pieces out of ALL of my china, and that's saying a lot. It's called the "Shetland" jug and I choose to use mine as a vase. It brings me immense joy displaying freshly cut roses in it through Spring and Summer. It measures about 20cm high and 14cm on the top diameter

I loooove this little milk and sugar set. The tray measures about 20.5cm x 13cm and the edges feature a wide, speckled gilding that you do sometimes find in the collection, but rarely.

This adorable little gilded nut dish measures about 12cm x 10.5cm

This is the sweet little pin dish or butter pat (whichever you prefer!), measuring about 8.5cm in diameter

This is a gorgeous, deep serving boat, measuring about 36cm long, 15.5cm wide and 5cm high

Utterly gorgeous, a little shell shaped trinket dish measuring about 11cm x 10cm and standing 2.5cm high.

This is one of the smallest but most expensive pieces I ever owned - a sweet little basket shaped bud vase, in the "Dudley" shape, measuring about 11cm high and 10cm wide

This is a small bread and butter plate, wonderful for serving slices of cake or sandwiches on. It measures about 15cm in diameter

This is a gorgeously large cake platter, measuring about 30.5cm in diameter - magnificent

I had to battle hard to get this cake plate, I suspect against Bakelite collectors keen to own something with this pretty little pink handle! It measures about 22.5cm x 22.5cm and is backstamped as being from May 1957

A lovely cake server, measuring about 22cm long

Another of the harder to find pieces in the collection, the lovely Candy Box which measures about 14 x 10 x 5cm high. It features the impressed words "Candy Box" and Canadian Registration 1951 on the base.

This low comport which I suspect would have been used as a fruit bowl has lovely Art Deco influenced curved edges and measures about 27cm x 22cm and 6cm high taken at the outside edges.

Almost identical to the comport above, but with slightly different dimensions (26x21.5x4.5) and with the addition of two smaller rose decals, and gilding to the outside edges

This is a diamond shaped low comport or trinket dish measuring about 15cm x 12cm and 3.5cm high

A pretty little comport with fluted edges (I am really trying not to think of this as an ashtray but the shape suggests it could be?! It's an awfully large one though if it is). It measures about 22cm x 21cm and 6cm high.

This is a lovely square plate measuring about 16cm x 16cm

This is a double tiered cake plate - wonderful to own. The top plate measures about 20.5cm in diameter while the lower plate is about 25cm across, and it stands about 27cm high

A triple tiered cake dish

My favourite item in any china collection - I and many others call this a Breakfast Set but I believe the proper term is "Bedside Set", complete with tray. So exquisite, I just love it. It's comprised of a teapot, teacup, sugar, creamer and toast rack. The tray is about 25cm across at the widest points, the teacup is a full size and the teapot stands about 9.5cm tall including the finial.

This is the adorable demitasse size cup and saucer set. The cup is about 7cm across on the top diameter and 6cm high, while the saucer is about 12.2cm across.

Tennis set with a regular sized teacup. The angular under-plate measures about 20cm x 14cm while the cup stands about 7cm high and measures about 8cm across the top diameter.

Tennis set with both different shaped cup and underplate to the set above, which measures about 25cm x 15cm, while the cup stands about 6cm high and measures about 8.5cm across the top diameter.

This little cruet set is so sweet - both a salt and pepper shaker on a tiny tray which measures about 16cm x 6cm

A different style of salt and pepper shaker - each one measures about 11cm high

The toast rack above holds 4 slices and measures about 17cm long

Love this piece too - the preserve pot which stands about 12cm x 8cm x 6cm high (at the outside edges). As always I'd love to know whether this originally came with a matching spoon

This is the delightful "Ascot" Preserve Pot, measuring roughly 7cm x 7cm x 7cm

A beautiful footed sugar bowl, measuring roughly 9.5cm on the top diameter and 4cm high

This low comport measures about 26cm x 15cm in the bowl section and stands about 3.5cm high

This footed comport measures about 18cm x 14.5cm in the bowl section and stands about 7cm high

This footed comport is about 13.5cm x 16cm in the bowl section and stands about 6cm high, with pretty fluted accents. I've seen these referred to as "chocolate comports" which I love!

This is lovely oval serving platter with gilded side handles, measuring about 27cm long and 18cm wide

A tray identical to the one above but with 3 rose transfers instead of the large single one

This handled round cake plate is about 26cm wide x 24cm high - I really do love the gilding on this one.

Again, one of the loveliest pieces, the divided dish in an oval shape. It measures about 29cm x 17cm.

Love this large divided heart plate! It's about 30cm long from curve to tip and 23cm at the widest point

This lovely sectioned plate measures about 30cm long and 18.5cm wide, and stands about 2.5cm high with 3 tiny "feet" to the base.

A divided dish almost identical to the one above but with the decals in different positions

This double sectioned plate is like a mix of the one above and the one below! It measures about 25cm long and 14.5cm wide, and stands about 2cm high with 4 tiny "feet" to the base. See below for another I've seen where the decals have been applied in different places

This is pretty, and reminds me of an little painter's palette! It measures about 25cm x 14.5cm

This cake plate with a wide metallic gold border measures about 24.5cm in diameter. The backstamp on it and the matching server below are different to all of the other, clearly earlier dated pieces in my collection, so I suspect these are definitely more 1950s than 1940s.

The matching server with gilt handle measures about 21cm long and 6cm at the widest point

This large cake plate measures about 26.5cm in diameter

The stacking teapot set - sooo gorgeous!

A teapot which measures about 14cm high x 21cm wide

The most beautiful covered butter dish - a rare piece indeed

A pretty flower-shaped comport which measures about 16cm across and 7cm high

Yet another comport, with gilded edges. Annoyingly I didn't note the dimensions of this one

And still ANOTHER comport! Identical to the one above, just without the gilding.

I've longed for one of these egg-cup sets but have always been outbid at auction (and haven't yet seen a complete set).

The "Gordon" shaped Candy Dish

This is just EXQUISITE! The only one I've seen was in the USA and was going to cost a fortune in shipping so I gave it a miss. It's a Lavabo, designed for hand washing.

The "Nita" shaped wall pocket, which measures about 21cm x 13cm

Another Wall Pocket, in a more Art Deco style - this is the "Paula" shape

A very pretty curved-edge sandwich plate, measuring about 24cm x 16.5cm

Yet another lovely sandwich plate, measuring about 25cm across

The strainer and underplate set

Another tab-handled dish

The most adorable condiment set on a tray!

This is a 15.5cm wide trivet

I'd really love one of these - a vase which is about 16cm high

A slightly different vase measuring 20.5cm x 11.5cm

Another vase - this one measures about 9cm tall

And yet another, rather unusually shaped vase, which is 11cm tall

A tab-handled small bowl measuring 14.5cm x 11cm x 3cm

A rectangular tray with side handles

I looove this basket! It measures (very precise measurements given by this seller!) 278mm x 167mm x 128mm tall.

A sweet little basket in a different shape to mine.

This circular plate shows one of the other colourways this pattern comes in

And a similar plate with a blue surround

Annnnd one with a Burgundy surround!
